Penn Study: Smoking Pot Could Impact Your Sleep

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Plenty of new studies are showing marijuana isn't as harmless as once thought.

Now, new research out of Penn suggests that smoking pot can also impair your sleep.

In a statement from the University, researchers say impaired sleep quality was discovered in marijuana smokers between 20 and 59 years old, particularly those who'd been using since their teen years.

"The strongest association was found in adults who started marijuana use before age 15; they were about twice as likely to have severe problems falling asleep, experiencing non-restorative sleep and feeling overly sleepy during the day," Penn says.

Furthermore, marijuana use was associated with "increased likelihood of reporting difficulty falling asleep, struggling to maintain sleep, experiencing non-restorative sleep, and feeling daytime sleepiness."

The study results were presented earlier this month at the annual SLEEP 2014. Researchers say the findings are important since marijuana is now legal in some states and is one of the most commonly used drugs in the country.
