Penn State And SJU Confirm Students Studying Abroad Are Safe After Brussels Attacks

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Penn State and St. Joseph's University have confirmed that all of their students traveling abroad in Belgium are safe.

St. Joseph's University released the following statement: 'Saint Joseph's University has confirmed that all seven of its students in Belgium are safe. As with prior incidents, per U.S. Department of State security guidelines, the University will not identify or provide any other personal information about its study abroad participants. Through its Center for International Programs and the University's on-site partner, Saint Joseph's is continuing to monitor the situation in Brussels and offer support services as necessary.'

Penn State said: 'We, of course, are aware of the bombings in Brussels and we have already been in touch with our seven students who are in Belgium. All are safe and out of harm's way.
Six are in Brussels and one is in Leuven, and none of those students were directly affected. We are grateful for this positive information about their safety.

It is Holy Week, so many Europeans are on holiday. Our study abroad provider has access to travel information and is able to quickly determine who is in Belgium.
While we have had no requests for assistance from any students, we remain alert and in contact with them. Student safety while abroad is a priority for Penn State.'

CBS News reports Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks at the Brussels airport and one of the city's metro stations.

At least 36 people were killed.
