PA Woman Becomes 1st U.S. Citizen To Contract Bacteria Resistant To 'Last Resort' Antibiotics

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Pennsylvania woman has become the first U.S. citizen to contract a bacteria that is resistant to "last resort," antibiotics. The woman went to a health clinic for a urinary tract infection.

Doctors discovered that she had the drug resistant E. coli bacteria in her system.

She was successfully treated with a different form of antibiotics.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society released a statement saying in part that "it is important that we remember it was caught and now is not the time to panic as many healthcare professionals are working to address this situation."
