Pa. Touts New Service To Search For Life Insurance Policies

HARRISBURG (CBS) -- Pennsylvania's Insurance Commissioner has announced a new service to help families search for lost life insurance policies after the death of a loved one.

Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller says her agency's Consumer Services Bureau hears weekly from people who believe a deceased loved one had an insurance policy but they can't find the paperwork. Previously, Miller says the Insurance Department could only be of limited help.

"Now using a process developed in conjunction with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, we can perform a comprehensive search of all companies providing life insurance in Pennsylvania, when someone contacts us to see if a loved one had a policy."

Miller says she supports legislation to require insurers to conduct those searches.
