Pa. Student Accused Of Assaulting Teacher During Pep Rally

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- A 16-year-old student has been charged after she allegedly pushed a teacher, causing her to fall down steps to the gym floor during a pep rally last week, authorities say.

The student allegedly used her forearm to push the 51-year-old Dieruff High School teacher.

Officials say the teacher was standing about two-thirds of the way up the steps and was trying to control a group of students who were trying to descend the bleachers.

Authorities say after the teacher was pushed, she stumbled and fell down the steps.

The teacher then tried to take the student's ID card, and she and the student allegedly struggled over the card.

The student is then accused of yelling an obscenity and allegedly used a closed fist to punch the teacher in her left shoulder.

Officials say the teacher was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries to her back, shoulder, arm and right jaw.

The allegation said the teacher will undergo more evaluations to determine the extent of her injuries.

The student has been charged with a felony count of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, a misdemeanor.

Authorities say a juvenile detention hearing is scheduled for Monday.
