Pa. State Police Using Unmanned Surveillance Balloon in Search For Accused Cop Killer

BLOOMING GROVE, Pa. (CBS) -- This is Day 45 of the police manhunt for suspected state trooper killer Eric Frein, and investigators say they're using a new tool.

Pennsylvania State Police trooper Tom Kelly says they're now using a large mylar balloon. Kelly says the device, similar to a weather balloon, was donated by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The balloon is tethered, unmanned and, unlike the helicopters also being used in the investigation, is silent. Kelly says it has been deployed in the area of the Alpine Mountain ski resort, in Henryville, Pa.

Authorities say it is just one of the many types of technology being used for the search.
