Pa. Residents Help Award $50K Grant To Local Physician

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A physician at the University of Pennsylvania has been awarded a $50,000 research grant from the Breast Cancer Coalition and Pennsylvania residents had a hand in making this gift possible.

The money was presented to Dr. Lewis Chodosh, Professor and Chair, Cancer Biology, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

President and Founder of PA Breast Cancer Coalition Pat Halpin-Murphy explains how the money will be used.

"He is looking to see what kind of activity takes place in cells that have survived chemotherapy and what causes them to re-invigorate themselves for a recurrence."

Halpin Murray says this grant was possible because of Pennsylvania residents who opted to donate their state tax refund to the Breast Cancer Coalition.

"Those people who did that really have funded enormously important research."

Every Pennsylvania resident can participate by simply filling in the amount they choose to donate on line 32 of the PA-40 tax form.
