Oxford Dictionaries Names 2014's 'Word Of The Year'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Last year, it was selfie. In 2014, it's...vape?
According to the Oxford Dictionaries blog, the "Word of the Year" is vape, a verb that means "to inhale and exhale the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device."
While the more colloquial "bae" and "normcore" were also contenders, Oxford's reasons for choosing "vape" are actually pretty scientific.
"You are thirty times more likely to come across the word vape than you were two years ago, and usage has more than doubled in the past year," Oxford says on its blog.
There's even a graph that apparently shows the usage of the word "peaked in April 2014," around the same time the UK's first vape lounge opened its doors.
While vape might seem like a relatively new word, Oxford claims it actually started occurring regularly in 2009.
