Our Old Friends Mornhinweg, Reid Make Crucial Mistakes Late In Respective Games

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- For 10 years, Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg coached together in Philadelphia with the Eagles. Now, they have new teams, but they're the same old guys.

With less than five minutes remaining in their game against the Packers on Sunday, the Jets converted a 4th-and-4 to score the game-tying touchdown...we all thought. However, we all thought wrong.

Mornhinweg, the Jets offensive coordinator, called timeout before the play negating what would have been a game-tying Jets touchdown pass from Geno Smith to Jeremy Kerley. Although the NFL rule states only the head coach or a player can be granted timeout, the referee did not realize who was yelling for the timeout and blew his whistle.

"I did not call for a timeout, so that's what I told them [the referees]," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said after the game. "Apparently, you guys are telling me Marty [Mornhinweg] called it. I guess, I don't know? Again, I know for a fact it never came from me and that's what I told them."

In Denver, our old friend Andy Reid and his Kansas City Chiefs had the ball on the Broncos 9-yard down 24-17 with one timeout. It was first-and-goal and Big Red decided to run the ball. Let's recap what happened next:

  • Reid does NOT call timeout.
  • Alex Smith pass completed to Donnie Avery to DEN 4-yard for three yards.
  • Reid calls timeout.
  • "I don't know why the Chiefs would take the timeout here," said CBS play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz
  • "So much time, maybe Andy Reid wants---this is the only reason I can think of---he wants time to think and talk to his players about what he is going to do," said CBS color commentator Phil Simms
  • Penalty on DEN Demarcus Ware - defensive pass interference. Ball to DEN 2-yard line.
  • 3rd-and-goal. Knile Davis up the middle for no gain.
  • 4th-and-goal (clock running, under :20): Incomplete.
