One Student's Cooking Earns Her $95K Scholarship

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There was a nervous energy at the Union League this morning as area high school culinary students attended the scholarship awards breakfast that would change their lives.

Students involved in CCAP, Careers Through Culinary Arts Program, finally found out the results of their hard work at the annual scholarship ceremony.

CCAP program coordinator Keri Fisher says awards ranged from $1,000 to tens of thousands of dollars.

"For so many of our students, they might not be able to go to college without these scholarships so these are really life-changing moments."

Thirty-four students received awards.

"We're giving out $683,000."

Among the recipients was Joi Shelton. Her mom Carla was overwhelmed when it was announced that her daughter received a $95,000 scholarship:

Kuznits: "What are you thinking about as you're tearing up?"

"I have thousands of dollars in tuition debt myself. I just know that she's going to be able to get a debt-free education which means so much going forward because she can just focus on just building her career."
