One Local Group Works To Help Patients Fight A Rare Zika Related Syndrome
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Some Zika infected patients in other countries are dealing with a rare syndrome that causes temporary paralysis. A local group has stepped in to offer support and information.
Guillain-Barre Syndrome strikes only 2 people in every 100-thousand, but it's now strongly associated with Zika infected patients. Lisa Butler is the executive director of the GBS/CIDP Foundation International in Narberth, a group of volunteers with firsthand knowledge of symptoms and suffering.
"We have had members of our medical advisory board visit Columbia, visit Brazil, they're working with the CDC and the World Health Organization to try and assist we are right now trying to set up a support group meeting in Puerto Rico there's been a recent outbreak there," she said.
Butler's father in law and son were both diagnosed with Guillan Barre.
