'One Book, One Philadelphia' Events Kick Off

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  The Free Library of Philadelphia kicks off its annual 'One Book, One Philadelphia' reading initiative.

For the last 14 years, the program has encouraged literacy throughout the city by picking one book for people to read over an eight-week span, and then having them discuss it.

"This particular year it's Cold Mountain. All around the theme of the Civil War," Siobhan Reardon, with the Free Library Of Philadelphia, told KYW Newsradio.

Reardon says Opera Philadelphia is running an opera of Cold Mountain during part of this year's program and other events are focused around the book that people can take part in as well.

"Every single neighborhood library participates in having book discussions. Our children's librarians will produce programming around Civil War based themes and then there will be several points and times during the program period where we'll have discussions at Parkway Central," Reardon said.

The program also has companion books for younger readers.
