Officials In Camden County Warn Homeowners Of Troubling Trend At Fire Scenes

PENNSAUKEN, N.J., (CBS) -- Officials in Camden County say the number of contractors aggressively soliciting business at fire scenes has gotten out of control.
"It's people that are listening to phone apps or scanner and responding to try to solicit at all hours of the day and night. It's really bad," says Camden County Chief Fire Marshall Paul Sandrock.
The situation went from annoying to completely shameful this month at a fire on Powell Street in Pennsauken.
Employees from two companies trying to drum up business got into a fist fight that continued into bumping cars down the road and an arrest.
Pennsauken Fire Chief Joe Palumbo witnessed the fight and says contractors and adjusters need to act more ethical.
"A multitude of contractors can be on the fire scene and they basically berate the homeowner and basically try to one up one another to try to get the business," says Palumbo.
He suggests that people got to their insurance company first and ask safety officials if they have a list of reputable companies for securing their home after a disaster.
