Officials ID Engineer In Deadly Hoboken Train Accident
HOBOKEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Officials have now identified the engineer in the Hoboken train accident that killed one person and injured at least 100 others.
Many passengers described the moments leading up to the crash and reported the train did not seem to slow down before approaching the station, eventually barreling into the structure.
The train engineer has been identified as 48-year-old Thomas Gallagher, a NJ Transit employee who has worked for the company for 29 years.
Gov. Chris Christie said in a news conference that Gallagher had been released from the hospital and was cooperating with law enforcement.
Neighbors of Gallagher are both shocked and concerned after hearing the news of the crash.
The woman killed in the crash has also been identified as 34-year-old Fabiola Bittar de Kroon. Authorities say she was killed after being struck by falling debris while waiting on the train platform.
In addition to interviewing Gallagher, investigators will be inspecting the train's braking system to determine how fast it was traveling. They will also be pulling recorders from the train to help determine a cause for the crash.
