Officer Shot, Killed At Jersey City Walgreens

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBS) – A police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty early Sunday morning in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Police responded to an armed robbery at a 24-hour Walgreens at Kennedy Boulevard and Communipaw Avenue just after midnight.

Officer Melvin Santiago exchanged gunfire with the suspect outside the store. Officer Santiago was shot in the head by the suspect, who used a gun from an armed security guard.

The officer was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

The suspect was shot and killed at the scene.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop says the city suffered a great loss and that an investigation is now underway.

No other officers or customers were injured during the incident.
