PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Charges are now pending against a 58 year-old man who struck an off-duty Philadelphia Police officer with his vehicle on Roosevelt Boulevard and Devereaux Avenue Sunday afternoon. Authorities say the driver left the scene of the crash. The vehicle was found a few blocks away.

Authorities say it was around 4 p.m. Sunday when 12th district officer Lamar Poole was hit.

They say it happened while the 42 year old was driving his motorcycle on East Roosevelt Boulevard and Devereaux Avenue.

Accident Investigators say the driver responsible got out of his car looked at Officer Poole on the ground and then left the scene.

"Fortunately, we had a couple of witnesses, one being a tow truck driver who followed the vehicle really helped out big time, followed the car, pinned the car in and called the police."

That driver was arrested a short time later and police suspect he was under the influence of alcohol.

The officer was transported by medics to Aria-Torresdale Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after 5:00 p.m.
