PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Federal health officials say more than 11 million people signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act during the second annual open-enrollment period, which ended Sunday.

Last year the open enrollment period drew 8.2 million registrations.

Kevin Counihan, CEO of the federal health insurance marketplace, says it was a "blowout" weekend for enrollment, which he says helped push signups ten percent higher than projected.

"We're very pleased about how things have gone," he said today.  "And when you see this kind of enrollment, it clearly validates the fact that we believe we're offering products and services that people value."

The 11.4 million people who selected plans include 248,000 in the Philadelphia region.  Statewide, about 472,000 Pennsylvanians enrolled, about 150,000 more than last year.

In New Jersey, 252,000 chose a plan, an increase of almost 100,000.
