North Philly Non-Profit Hands Out Grants To Nearly Two Dozen Non-Profits, Benefiting Community
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A North Philadelphia non-profit handed out grants this week to nearly two dozen non-profits that impact the Cecil B. Moore community.
"We all had to step up and do our part," said Ken Scott, he runs the Beech Companies, the group gave twenty thousand dollars in grants to 20 Consortium Cecil B. Moore organizations. The grants range from 500 to 2500- to help non-profits- as funding fear over government funding rises.
"We do it because we are trying to make a difference- we are trying to rebuild these communities that are affected," he said.
"This is sort of like the kick off," said Veronica Castillo-Perez, she works for Philadanco. They announced a million-dollar fundraising effort that must be completed by the end of June of next year if they are to receive a 500 bequest. The Beech Grant helps and if they meet their mark.
'It would lift it now from out of a day to day basis," said Castillo-Perez, " and it would help us start the Joan Meyers Brown International School of Dance."
Groups like 'Teenshop,' 'Mothers in Charge' and 'Center in the Park' are among the groups that received grants. The Consortium has awarded a half million dollars in grants over the years.
