Neighbors fed up with sinkhole in North Philadelphia say city has offered a temporary solution

Months after sinkhole opened in North Philadelphia, city covered it with metal plate, residents say

Residents dealing with a sinkhole on their North Philadelphia street said the city has provided a temporary solution after they raised concerns.

This sinkhole is located along the 2400 block of West Seybert Street, down the street from Girard College. Neighbors told CBS News Philadelphia it was starting to fill up with trash and debris. A van got stuck in the hole on Monday.

Block captain Renee Bowers said the hole started small in March and then grew wider and deeper. She's been trying to contact the city, she said.

"I be on their tails," she said. "I don't care if it was a holiday ... Somebody was going to come out here. It doesn't make sense."

City crews eventually came to the scene on Monday and put a metal plate over the hole, but residents say it's not a permanent solution.

"It's just been overall a mess between parking, driving, we have kids that live on this block, we have older folks that live on this block, so all around, it's a danger," resident Jen Hinds said.

Bowers said she has a message for anyone dealing with issues in their neighborhood: "Bug the hell out of the city until they get somebody to come out. That's what you do."

CBS News Philadelphia reached out to the city Streets and Water departments about the sinkhole and has not heard back.
