Strong wind, rain, coastal flooding continue Monday at Jersey Shore before a quieter week

Bands of showers, blustery winds continue in Philadelphia; worst of conditions down at Jersey Shore

The significant coastal storm will continue to impact the Philadelphia region through Monday, bringing strong onshore winds, bands of showers, and significant coastal flooding along the New Jersey and Delaware shorelines.

Conditions will gradually improve by Tuesday as the system weakens and moves out to sea. High pressure will then begin to build in, bringing calmer weather through the middle and end of the week.

For the rest of Monday, most of the area will experience showers and pockets of mist and drizzle along with a raw northeast wind with gusts to 25+ mph. Along the coast, the rain will be heavier intermittently, and winds will still gust to 40+ mph – below advisory level but still quite strong.

The greatest threat, though, remains coastal flooding. At the high tide cycle this afternoon, generally between 1 and 2 p.m., we will expect major coastal flooding with as much as 3 feet of water covering roadways.

Sunday night in Wildwood, there were reports of 2 feet of water covering roads, and we can expect as much as 3 feet of inundation on the roads, in spots like Atlantic City, Margate and Ocean City, Monday afternoon.

The threat level in Cape May County has been reduced to moderate for coastal flooding, but Cape May County beaches like Avalon, Wildwood and Cape May may still see as much as 2.5 feet of inundation on the roads. The floodwaters will recede later Monday evening, and while the overnight high tide may still produce minor flooding, it will not be anywhere near as dangerous or widespread.

By Tuesday, conditions will steadily improve. Clouds and lingering showers will clear from south to north through the morning, followed by sunshine and more seasonable temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s.

Dry weather will dominate Tuesday night and Wednesday as high pressure settles in. Thursday and Friday will be cooler and crisp but sunny. The quiet pattern should last into the weekend, with another potential system not expected until late Sunday.
