The crash happened just before 4 p.m. near mile marker 35.5, New Jersey State Police said in a news release.

A Peterbilt tractor-trailer heading south had to change lanes and get onto the shoulder to avoid htiting cars in traffic, NJSP said. During that lane change, the truck driver lost control and hit a Toyota SUV, causing the truck to move forward and jack-knife.

As the truck turned sideways, it hit nine more passenger vehicles.

A total of six people were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries after the crash, according to NJSP.
