NJ Town Wants To Help 'Fellow Lumbertonians' After Hurricane Matthew
LUMBERTON, N.J. (CBS) -- Images of deadly flooding in Lumberton, N.C. are heartwrenching. Homes are underwater and lives are lost in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.
"We like to call ourselves fellow Lumbertonians."
More than 500 miles away, but not far removed from flooding woes, the Mayor and folks in Lumberton, N.J. are offering a helping hand.
"In 2004, they actually sent care packages up to our residents, supplies and monetary donations through Red Cross," said Mayor Sean Earlen.
Devastating flooding in 2004 and in 2007, 2011 and 2014 is still fresh in the minds of Lumberton, N.J. officials. They readily accepted donations from folks in Lumberton, N.C. in 2004 and are now repaying the favor by collecting donations for their fellow Lumbertonians down south.
For residents in North Carolina the cleanup process will be slow and the recovery, relentless. Every donation will matter, even those from hundreds of miles away.
