NJ Couple Awakened By Rabid Bat Flying In Their Bedroom
BARRINGTON, N.J. (CBS) – The New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services reported to the Camden County Health Department that a bat removed from a home in Barrington has tested positive for rabies.
On July 20, a Barrington couple was woken up by a bat flying around in their bedroom. The couple notified an Animal Control Officer who picked up the bat and submitted it to the NJDHSS Public Health & Environmental Laboratory.
Three days later, the Camden County Health Department received word that the animal tested positive for rabies. The family was notified and was advised to seek rabies prophylaxis.
"Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment," said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Health Department.
Rodriguez urges residents to observe a few rules, including acting responsibly as a pet owner:
- Keep vaccinations up to date for all dogs, cats, and ferrets.
- Keep your pets under direct supervision so they do not come in contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately.
- Contact your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood. They may be unvaccinated and could be infected by the disease.
She adds it's important to avoid direct contact with unfamiliar animals.
