Newest Olympic Sport: Ultimate Frisbee?

By David Heim

Ultimate Frisbee, as well as other flying disc sports, have been recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

*Cue college students rejoicing everywhere.* To the green!

Now to clarify, this does not mean that sports like Ultimate Frisbee will be included in the next Olympic lineup just yet, but the announcement that the IOC is recognizing the sport is a big first step in terms of possible inclusion down the road.

The news was announced at an IOC session in Kuala Lumpur Sunday.

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) commented on the announcement.

"This is an incredible milestone in the 30-year history of WFDF," WFDF said via BBC.com. "Today's decision will give a further boost to our efforts to increasing the presence of Flying Disc sports in all countries and on all continents."

Ultimate Frisbee is one of several flying-disc games that the WFDF governs. Others include Disc Golf and Freestyle. However, Ultimate Frisbee has been the most popular.
