New West Phila. Apartment Building Gets 'Topped Off'; August Completion Expected

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A "topping-off ceremony" was held today for the first residential, market-rate high-rise building in the University City section of West Philadelphia.

The project, at 3737 Chestnut Street, will include a 25-story residential tower with 276 rental apartments and retail space on the ground floor.

"The tower, at corner of 38th and Chestnut, has a pattern of windows that is similar to masonary buildings in the neighborhood, so it's contextual," notes Michael Ytterberg of BLT Architects.  "However, the side facing the church is all glass, because it was felt that an all-glass façade, which mirrors the church building, is the most respectful move you can make to the church."

The project is expected to be ready for occupancy in August.  Graduate students and professionals are being targeted.

Pre-rental begins February 1st for the one- and two-bedroom units, which range from $1,700 to $2,900 per month.  More information at 3737chestnut.com.
