New Program Encourages Local Shopping On Small Business Saturday

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Hopefully you got a great deal on that new TV on Black Friday, but now the focus shifts to the smaller businesses throughout the region.

It's Small Business Saturday.

"It's a day to really celebrate the small businesses in your neighborhood, or in your community," says Kevin Moran with the Fairmount CDC. "And the idea is to remember them during the holiday shopping season."

In the Art Museum area, Moran says they are trying something new this year to encourage local shopping:

"This is the first time that we're doing a collective effort, organizing all the businesses to offer a single program."

He says Small Business Passports were delivered to residents in the neighborhood.

"If you go in and make a purchase you'll earn a stamp," he explains.

When you get three stamps, you're entered to win one of several prizes. Another way to enter...

"Folks can stop by their favorite local business and tag a photo on Twitter or Instagram using #SmallBusinessSelfie and the handle @ArtMuseumArea," says Moran.

Over two dozen businesses are taking part, and Moran says it's not just stores:

"A lot of the restaurants are also participating, so food purchases will count towards the winning prize as well."

You can also get a passport, as well as see a list of the participating businesses, by clicking here.
