State Trooper, Good Samaritan Rescue 8 People From Sinking Boat In Ocean County
POINT PLEASANT, N.J. (AP) -- A state police trooper and a good Samaritan combined to help eight people safely escape a boat that was sinking in a waterway at the New Jersey shore last weekend. The 26-foot boat was in the Point Pleasant Canal when it began taking on water around 5 p.m. Sunday, state police said.
The good Samaritan helped five people get from the boat to land, while the captain and two others stayed aboard as they tried to get the vessel to a nearby dock in Point Pleasant.

Sgt. Michael Krauchuck, a member of the state police's marine services bureau, arrived on scene minutes later in a state police boat and tied the sinking vessel to his boat. However, he quickly realized the private boat was taking on water too fast and was close to sinking in the rough conditions, so Krauchuck pulled the three remaining people on to the state police boat and cut the lines before the private boat sank.
It's not yet known what caused the boat to sink.
