New Jersey Man Charged With Assaulting 8-Month-Old Child

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Authorities have arrested a Malaga, New Jersey who is accused of assaulting his 8-month-old child, leaving the infant with a fractured skull and other injuries.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's office says 25-year-old Michael Rodriguez was arrested Thursday and is being charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities allege that Rodriguez shook the baby on the night of November 5, causing the fractured skull and retinal hemorrhaging usually caused when a baby is shaken. Rodriguez later called 9-1-1 to report the child's labored breathing.

Rodriguez is being held on $100,000 bail. New Jersey's Child Protection and Permanency agency removed the injured infant, her twin brother, and 1-year-old sister from the home on Delsea Drive where they lived with Rodriguez and his wife.

The infant spent over a month in the hospital and is still receiving treatment.
