New Jersey Lawmaker Would Limit Thanksgiving Hours
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Stores in New Jersey might have their hours limited during future Thanksgivings.
State Sen. Richard Codey is considering a bill that would prevent stores from opening before 9 p.m. so employees can enjoy the holiday with their families.
The Democrat says employees are put in the position of risking their jobs if they want to celebrate the holiday. Codey says companies should put their workers' needs ahead of profits.
Retailers say they're responding to customer demand and opening on Thanksgiving helps increase sales and profits, which benefit employees.
More than two dozen malls and outlets in New Jersey are opening on Thanksgiving, some as early as 10 a.m.
