New Film Documents Misidentification Of Local Man As Boston Bomber, Role Social Media Played

By Melony Roy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - "Help Us Find Sunil Tripathi" is a new documentary that aims to shed light on the identity of a local man misidentified as suspect #2 in the Boston Marathon bombing.

"In order to understand what happened, we had to know who Sunil was and what he was going through in his life in order to paint a full picture of his story," explains film director Neal Broffman.

Broffman says there are a number of conversations that can be drawn from the film:

"How do we treat each other online in social media, ethics in journalism, but ultimately its a film about this family -- the struggles they went through and especially the struggles that Sunil went through that he ultimately and sadly lost."

Sunil, from Radnor, Delaware County who attended Brown University, committed suicide and his body was later found in a Providence river.

The documentary features home videos, interviews with family and friends, voicemail's from national media, and the former general manager of Reddit.

The film ends with facts about mental illness and has been submitted to multiple festivals including Sundance and Tribecca.
