New 3D Printed Cap Can Detect When Milk Has Gone Bad

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Advancements in technology may mean consumers won't have to smell if milk has gone bad.

Using 3D printing, scientists created a plastic cap embedded with electronics to wirelessly monitor milk's freshness.

The findings were published in the journal Microsystems & Nanoengineering.

The article states, "The sensor detects shifts in liquid dielectric constant signals to warn consumers about potential food safety issues."

The new technology could also make it possible for shoppers to check the freshness of shelved food from their cell phone.
