Neshaminy School Board Votes On Closings Of 2 Elementary Schools

NESHAMINY, Pa. (CBS) -- The Neshaminy school board has made it official – two elementary schools in the district will close at the end of this school year; the board pointing to declining enrollment, as demographics in the district continue to shift.
A unanimous vote from the Neshaminy school board to close Lower Southampton elementary in Feasterville, a 5-4 vote to close Oliver Heckman in Langhorne.
Students from Lower Southampton will attend the new Tawanka elementary which is slated to open at the start of the upcoming school year. Oliver Heckman students will attend either Tawanka or Pearl S. Buck in Levittown.
District spokesman Chris Stanley says the board understands parents take pride in and invest in their schools and they understand this is difficult.
"It's hard closing schools, nobody wants to do it, but I certainly hope they will stay involved with the district and make great new communities in the new schools."
Stanley says staffing assignments and finalized re-districting of Heckman will be addressed at meetings over the summer.
