Near Independence Hall, Free Bicycle Tune-Ups For 'Bike To Work Week'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Hotel Monaco, at Fifth and Chestnut Streets in Old City Philadelphia, offered free bicycle check-ups today, during "National Bike To Work Week" (see related story).
Informed through word of mouth, the Internet, or just happening by, cyclists took advantage of the expertise offered by Keswick Cycle Shop.
"I was desperately in need of a bike checkup," said Rachel, "and then I saw that they were free here."
Brian Hackford of Keswick Cycle, who also owns bike shops in West Philadelphia, Glenside, and Cherry Hill, worked his magic on Rachel's bicycle, adjusting derailleurs and brakes, and providing lube for the chain and air for the tires.
"I'm going to snug up the chain," he advised Rachel.
Nicole (at right in photo) was his next customer with a 1976 Schwinn cycle that she referred to as "vintage." She was pleased with the prognosis provided by Hackford.
"Just needs a hub adjustment, and he's nice enough to oil it up and fix my seat for me," she said.
Hackford's best advice:
"Get your bike tuned at least once a year. On a daily basis, tire pressure, and making sure that your chain is lubed."
