Motorists Grabbing Their Emergency Kits Following Massive Pa. Turnpike Accident

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)--The Pa. Turnpike pile-up yesterday had a lot of motorists, who were stuck for hours, making sure winter emergency preparedness kits are well stocked in their trunks

"Oh it will be the first thing that goes in there."

Brian Surges of Horsham was stuck in the backup. He says he has an emergency kit but it wasn't in the car.

"Funny thing is because we just got this new car, and my wife, our old car was totaled. All of the stuff is still in the dining room. I actually saw it this morning on my way out. She has an emergency kit and I didn't even bother putting it in the car."

AAA's Mid Atlantic's Jana Tidwell says you should have things like powerbars, water, blankets and a first aid kit in the trunk.

"You never know when you can be stranded in cold weather conditions."

She also says a shovel and kitty litter could help get you free you from old man winters grip.

"Just leave it there. Forget about it, so that you have it."
