Mother Nature Brings First Snowfall Of 2014
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mother Nature wasted little time bringing the first winter storm of 2014 to the region.
The storm moved in late Thursday and lingered around Friday morning, bringing snow and strong winds. According to the National Weather Service, the storm dumped 9 inches at Philadelphia International Airport.
As a result of the storm, the School District of Philadelphia and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia canceled classes Friday. In addition, hundreds of other schools either closed or opened late Friday. (See School Closings Section)
With the snow moving out, the next issue is brutal and dangerous cold temperatures. The forecasted high for Friday is 16 degrees, but with the wind, it is going to feel much colder than that.
There were numerous delays and cancellations at Philadelphia International Airport. (Travel Guide). Airport spokesperson Victoria Lupica urged passengers to stay up to date through their airlines or 1-800-PHL-GATE.
The storm also forced the Philadelphia Streets Department and the City of Camden to suspend trash pickup until Saturday.
A state of Emergency was declared in New Jersey meaning all state offices, including courts, will be closed Friday.
