More Than A Dozen Severely Neglected Horses Rescued From Pa. Property
QUAKERTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a case of animal neglect one rescue group is calling "the worst" it's ever seen after helping rescue more than 16 horses, almost two dozen sheep and a dog.
Authorities called on the staff at Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown to rescue the animals from an undisclosed property.
The rescue group was first alerted to the case on Friday, just hours before this weekend's massive winter storm began. Its staff and several volunteers immediately traveled to the property and transported five horses who were the most critical to Quakertown Vet Clinic.
Yesterday, the rescue team went back to the scene and transported seven more horses, 20 sheep and one dog to its facility to provide emergency care.
Officials at the rescue say three of those horses were so severely emaciated they were unable to stand and require round the clock care. Two of the horses are pregnant.
Four horses remain on the property, due to road conditions, and are being fed by rescue volunteers until it's safe enough to transport them.
Last Chance Ranch called the volume of animals and the number of dead horses "astounding."
They are asking for donations as they continue to provide veterinary and nutritional care to the animals.
