More Options Than Ever For The Gluten Free

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- May is National Celiac Disease Awareness Month and eating to stay healthy is easier than ever.

People with Celiac disease, or a sensitivity to gluten, cannot handle or digest, wheat, rye or barley and sometimes oats.

Lindsey DeCaro, a registered dietitician at Weis Markets in Huntingdon Valley, Montgomery County, says there are plenty of options.

"Produce department is a plethora of opportunities, fresh fruits and vegetables, unseasoned meats, unseasoned nuts, frozen foods, seafood is fine, rice and most dairy products."

Many markets have special aisles for gluten free products such as waffles and breads and cereals. The label will say gluten free, so you have to read before buying.
