Montgomery County Sheriff Warns Residents About Phone Scam

By Jim Melwert

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, P.A., (CBS) -- The Montgomery Sheriff's office is warning about a scam where callers threaten people with arrest, unless they send money or give them a credit card number.

Montgomery County Sheriff Russell Bono says his office got word of the scam in Lycoming County.

"Individuals are identifying themselves as deputy sheriffs, claiming to have a warrant out for an individual, and if they don't pay $1500 they were going to be arrested," Bono said.

Bono Says there was a similar attempt in Montgomery County about a year ago, so as a precaution he's reminding residents that no such procedure would ever be used by authorities.

"We would never under any circumstances call and demand money over the telephone for a warrant or for child support or for any other judicial matter," Bono explained.

Sheriff Bono adds that unless you know who is calling you, don't ever give personal information over the phone.
