Montgomery County Volunteers Turn Tech Trash Into Tech Treasure

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Tech gifts are on top of the list for many this holiday season. One nonprofit in Montgomery County is working to ensure families on strict budgets can stay connected.

Inside a warehouse in Audobon, volunteers bring old laptop and desktop computers back from the dead.

"We add RAM. We exchange the hard drives. We make sure that everything is working. We install Windows 10," said Robert Toporek, the founder of the nonprofit Team Children. "We have about 500 computers that need a home. Now, they're not free, but they're low-cost. So somebody can have a desktop for either $65 or $140."

The fees just cover the cost of parts. Alan Crawford is among the Voya Financial employees here who spent their day performing PC surgery.

"It's a team building exercise for us and it gives us the good feeling of doing something for somebody who needs it," Crawford said.

If you're looking to donate an old computer or are interested in buying a low-cost, refurbished one, visit the Team Children website or call 610-666-1795.
