UPPER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, Pa., (CBS) – Investigators say two people are dead after a car flipped into the Schuylkill Canal in Upper Providence Township Monday night.

Four people were in the car when investigators say the driver backed out of a parking area, crossed over roadway, onto a grass embankment causing the car to flip over into the canal.

First responders arrived at the scene near 400 Towpath Road and found the car on its roof in the water. Investigators say the 21-year-old driver and one passenger were able to escape. But the two other people in the car drowned, according to investigators.

Upper Providence police and Montgomery County detectives are investigating whether the driver will face criminal charges.
