Montco Woman Charged With DUI Homicide in Crash That Killed Her Husband

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Authorities in Montgomery County, Pa. have charged a 54-year-old Elkins Park woman with homicide-by-vehicle and related crimes in connection with a crash over the summer, in Huntingdon Valley, that killed her husband.

Prosecutors say Alexandria Cogan had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit when she got behind the wheel of a Mazda Miata on August 19th.

In the passenger seat was her husband, Stuart.  Police say she was speeding when she lost control of the sports car on Huntingdon Pike, in Lower Moreland, and struck a car going in the other direction.

"This should serve as a stark reminder as to what can happen and the tragedy that can befall people that engage in drinking and driving," says first assistant DA Kevin Steele.

Alexandria Cogan sustained serious injuries, as did the driver of the other car.

Steele says Cogan faces a mandatory three years behind bars on the homicide-by-vehicle DUI charge.  Court records show she was admitted into a diversionary program for first-time offenders after a DUI more than a decade ago.

She has been released on $100,000 unsecured bail.
