Montco High School Forced To Cancel Football Season Due To Lack Of Participation

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. (CBS) -- A Montgomery County high school is cancelling their varsity football season, as the decision is made they don't have enough players to safely field a team.

Springfield, Montgomery County athletic director Jason Pane calls it the perfect storm of injuries and a smaller school not having enough players.

"And we're getting to the place that makes me uncomfortable of putting our kids on a varsity field who aren't ready for that level of football."

Pane says he met with the football players and their families to tell them before making the public announcement.

"You know, it's especially difficult for our seniors."

And he says they'll keep working with JV team will play with hopes of fielding a varsity team in the coming years.

Pane also says they're working with the community to fill the role football played on Friday nights, including things like Homecoming.
