Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: Trump Needs A Better Message

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell discussed the ongoing Presidential election, expressing concern that Donald Trump's current message will not connect with enough voters win the White House.

In an interview with Chris Stigall on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, McConnell said instead airing his personal grievances on the campaign trail, Trump should focus on the over-regulation conservatives feel emanates from too many agencies in Washington.

"I'd like to see him begin to talk about that rather than stuff he's talking about the last few weeks, most of which is outrageous and shouldn't be said. We ought to be talking about what the American people are concerned about, which is that they are falling behind. They're lives are not what they used to be and we need to explain why that happened and how to change it."

The Kentucky Senator insisted that despite taking their primary process by storm, Trump will not fundamentally change the GOP.

"The primary voters obviously wanted an outsider and they got that person in Donald Trump. What I don't think will happen is that he will change the basic principles of the Republican party. I don't think the platform will be different. I don't think most of us are going to change our views about what the country ought to look like."

McConnell dismissed concerns that running on the same ticket as Donald Trump will negatively impact Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey's chances of fending off his Democratic challenger Katie McGinty.

"Pat's a very smart guy, very capable guy. He's running a great campaign and he can rise or fall on his own and I think he will be re-elected...I'm not going to give Pat advice about how to handle [running in conjunction with Trump]. He knows Pennsylvania and knows how to win this race."
