PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Former Pennsylvania state senator and political lightning rod Milton Street is running for Congress.

Street has been in politics for decades. In 2015, he placed sixth in a bid for the Democratic candidate for mayor of Philadelphia.

He now has his eyes set on a spot in Congress in the 2nd congressional district, a seat currently held by 11 term Congressman Chaka Fattah, who lost a renomination in the Democratic primary.

"I want to continue my efforts I've been making for the last eight years to stop the violence in our communities and schools. I have comprehensive plan to stop the violence."

Street, who is running as an Independent candidate, says he feels good about his chances of being elected.

"I'm going to run hard and I'm going to be a challenge, I believe."

Street is challenging Democrat Dwight Evans and Republican James Jones for that seat in Congress.
