Millions Of Unclaimed Tax Credit Money Available To Philadelphians

By David Spunt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As tax season comes to a close on Monday, April 18, a Philadelphia City Councilman is making it his mission to inform the public about a tax credit that could ease the pain for moderate to lower income families.

Councilman Allan Domb has pushed for Philadelphians to apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit, if they qualify.

"It is crucial," Domb told Eyewitness News.

Domb says there is $100 million unclaimed from last year. If the money isn't claimed in a three year period, it's no longer available to the taxpayer.

"If you're a single parent or married and are making anywhere from eight to twenty dollars an hour, there's a high probability you'll qualify for a check," Domb said.

North Philadelphia resident Lia Padilla qualified for the credit, soon after she learned about it. The single mother said she's spreading the word to people.

"It may not be a lot of money to some people, but for other people like me, it's a significant amount, she said.
