Mill About On Father's Day

By Phran Novelli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There used to be a lot of mills in our area. The Wissahickon Valley alone was home to 60 mills, dating from colonial times. Only a few survive today, and you can visit one for free, this Sunday, June 15th,; Springfield Mills at Bloomfield Farm, right across from the entrance to the Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill. It's no coincidence that's right near Flourtown, since this Grist Mill ground the corn grown nearby into meal and flour for centuries.

Dating from 1761, this historic mill has been restored by volunteers who put in the painstaking effort to get it running for the first time since World War II. You can see it in action Sunday from 12 to 3, when they'll be doing demonstrations and admission is free that day.

A nice way to spend Father's Day and, as you wander the historic grounds, you can also enjoy an 'Insider Art Show and Sale' taking place that day. It features works of art created by Morris Arboretum staff, such as the iron sculpture pictured here.
