Messy Commute Gives Way To Freezing Cold In Chester County
PAOLI, Pa., (CBS) -- Headaches for morning commuters quickly turned into another kind of headache -- bitter cold temperatures, especially in Chester County.
Howling winds and near white-out conditions greeted early morning travelers.
Plows kept Chester County's major roads passable, spinning tires showing the slippery challenge facing drivers. Those trying to walk in conditions that felt more like the Klondike than Chester County.
Strong winds that kicked in when the flakes stopped falling made just getting to your bus or train a winter travel adventure.
"My boyfriend tried to dig a car out to drive me to Overbrook. That wasn't happening. I had to walk half mile to the bus. That is about the time I realized I would have to run in the street about a half mile. That was fun," commuter Heather Bosak said.
Fortunately, ambulance crews did not respond to an increased number of serious accidents. By midday, plowing left major arteries for the most part just wet, while shovelers biggest headache wasn't how high the snow had piled, but rather how low temperatures had dropped as the first big freeze of 2014 moved in.
"I'm so glad I'm layered up. I have like two sets of clothes on today, plus my Eskimo coat," commuter Kalicia Alexander said.
