Memorial To The Lost On Display In University City
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A memorial to the victims of gun homicides in Philadelphia last year has been erected at the corner of 37th and Chestnut Streets in front of Tabernacle Church in University City. It's called a "Memorial to the Lost" and it's the work of a group of faith-based organizations operating under the leadership of an organization called Heeding God's Call to End Gun Violence.
"There are 206 T-shirts each with marked with the name, age and date of death of a homicide victim," Bryan Miller, the group's executive director, tells KYW Newsradio.
Pastor Katie Aikins was working with volunteers carefully hanging the T-shirts on a series of temporary pipes lining the property. "It's a memorial so we're lifting up the dignity and worth of each person whose life was lost and also trying to remind folks that for every life that's lost there's a family that's grieving, a community that's affected," Aikins said. Aikins says the memorial, which she expects will be seen by thousands of passersby, will be on display outside her church for about two weeks.
