PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- 65 members of a Philadelphia educational and cultural program will serve as youth ambassadors representing the city on their trip to Egypt next month.

The mission of the African Genesis Institute is to provide African American youth a historical perspective of their roots and culture as they work on becoming leaders of the 21st century. The institute has been around since 1993.

Amira Murray is one of the students.

"The African Genesis Institute is an educational and cultural program that helps youth become more aware of who they are as proud African Americans. For two years we traveled throughout the United States learning about our history. Once we complete the two-year program we will be eligible to go to Africa. The African proverb, 'it takes a village to raise a child' became clear while on this journey with the African Genesis Institute."

The city of Philadelphia announced the students will serve as ambassadors to Philadelphia while on their trip to Egypt next month.

They also got "Visit Philadelphia" backpacks to take along with them.
