Andrew McCarthy Dismisses Uproar Over Trump's Special Prosecutor Line At 2nd Debate
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Andrew McCarthy, a writer for National Review and a former US Attorney, talked to Dom Giordano on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT about Donald Trump's comments in the second presidential debate in which he said that, if elected, he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while Secretary of State, expressing his belief that President Obama should have chosen that option at the beginning of this process.
"I thought it was one of the sillier critiques I had heard. To begin with, what Trump suggested, and mind you, I'm not a big Trump admirer, what Trump suggested was actually more appropriate and more transparent than what actually happened, which was, I know the line about you'd be in jail got all the yucks, but what he actually said was he was going to have the Attorney General not investigate or prosecute Mrs Clinton, but appoint a special prosecutor, which means somebody who can be as independent of the Justice Department as you can arrange under circumstances where all the prosecutive power is actually executive power, so, ultimately, such a prosecutor would report to the President."
He also thinks that if the FBI had done a better job with their investigation, this might not still be a campaign issue.
"If you had somebody who had integrity and was reasonably objective and looked at it, the American people could say, okay, at least this thing got a fair shot, which, I think, is all we were saying."
